A friend asked for suggestions of ways to maintain posting momentum after [community profile] snowflake_challenge ends. There are plenty of ways to build momentum and keep up your posting frequency. Here are some ideas.

Requisite #Heated Rivalry Content

Heated Rivalry, the Canadian show about queer hockey romance, is popping up all over Dreamwidth (as well as every other platform). The Squeaky Wheel, which bills itself as "the first-ever satire publication that focuses on the experience of having a disability" channels The Onion as it mocks our disabled lives. Here’s their first take on the series:

Audio Description Ruins Family TV Night During Unexpected Sex Scene - The Squeaky Wheel

[hero photo not reproduced here; its alt text is "a family watching Heated Rivalry"]

A recent family TV night at the household of 14-year-old Sarah Mason ended abruptly when the audio description began to vividly relay the details of an unexpected and lengthy sex scene.

“It went on and on about the positions, and how much pleasure was on their faces, and so much ‘thrusting,’” said Sarah’s mother, Beverly Mason. “It was excruciating. I shut it off and told everyone to go to bed.”

I'd love to learn whether Heated Rivalry's audio description is as sexy as the Squeaky Wheel would have it.

Snowflake Challenge 5: Wishlist

In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it and include a link to your wishlist if you feel comfortable doing so.

If you have wishes for transformative works of your own works or another's work, remember to include links to those sources in order to make it easier for people to create.

Be sure to check out other people's wishlists. Maybe someone will grant your wish! Maybe you will be inspired to grant a wish! If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

This is one of my favorite challenges. It can be difficult for a lot of people to ask for things, so remember not to put too much pressure on yourself for coming up with the perfect wishlist! Your wishes could be something you're recently interested in or something you've wanted for a long time but were afraid to ask for or anything in between. There are no limits!

Absolute Batman #15

“The Joker to me is always the opposite of Batman. So if Absolute Batman is this thing, Joker would become a billionaire with all the resources, who is telling Bruce, ‘Well, you’re not going to become anything,’ and then it becomes, who would he put in Batman’s way? Well, Joker plays both sides, so he creates crime and creates the means to stop crime. He’s always playing us, and the Joker issue explains what a clown is and why the Joker loves them… If Bruce is Joker now, and he is chaos and he is disruption, then Joker is the system and order. That means Joker would have a Batcave, he would have a mansion, he would be handsome, and be a socialite. Maybe he has Robins!” -- Scott Snyder

Dogs Build Their Vocabularies Like Toddlers

Basket the Border collie seems to have a way with words. The 7-year-old dog, who resides on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, knows the names of at least 150 toys — “froggy,” “crayon box” and “Pop-Tart,” among them — and can retrieve them on command.

The number is average. Most dogs can learn 100-200 words, typically 150-160. However, a majority of those are verbs like "sit" and "fetch." Nouns are less common, but most dogs learn a bunch of things like "food" and "leash." Having a vocabulary that is mostly nouns is uncommon.

Why a collie? Because people used to teach them the names of the sheep. "All in" is useful, but "Cut Molly" (out of the herd) is even more so.

It's quite a seat-of-the-pants book. I told you I had plans very far ahead. Are there sort of waypoints? I kind of know where we need to be by this issue. I know where we need to be by this issue... I'm still gonna sit down and, like, start writing a new issue. I'll suddenly think, ‘Oh, what if I threw this in there?’ I threw Terry Long into an issue. Not for very long. Nobody needs to worry. But I threw him in it for an issue. -- Al Ewing

This poem came out of the October 7, 2025 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by prompts from [personal profile] siliconshaman and [personal profile] chanter1944. It also fills the "Black / Orange" square in my 10-1-25 card for the Fall Festival Bingo fest. This poem has been sponsored by a pool with [personal profile] fuzzyred. It belongs to the series Practical Magics.

Birdfeeding

Today is cloudy, chilly, breezy, and wet. It rained earlier, and has been spitting rain occasionally.

I fed the birds. I haven't seen any though.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 1/8/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 1/8/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

Now dozens of sparrows are suddenly mobbing the hopper feeder.

EDIT 1/8/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

I've seen some sparrows, and a larger dark-colored bird that may have been a starling or a grackle. The light was too low to tell exactly, even though it was on the metal tray feeder.

It's been spitting rain off and on. Heavier rain is forecast for tonight.

I am done for the night.

The official line was that Justice League America would be the funnier title and Justice League Europe would be the more serious one, but things weren’t working out that way so far. As JLA #30 took that title to new depths of darkness, JLE #6 was Giffen and DeMatteis’ most ridiculous issue yet, its plot shamelessly engineered for maximum absurdity. Rumiko Takahashi couldn’t have done it better. )

I've been feeling a bit bored lately, but I started reading some more 1920s detective novels that I haven't read before (the works of Freeman Wills Crofts) and am having a lot of fun.

His plots are elaborate, not to say convoluted, and there are lots of details about the investigations as well as usually a bit of international travel and some colorful descriptions of scenery, but at the same time his narrative voice is rather dry and quite formal, sort of like a Data or Spock character was given a lively passage in another language and translated it as directly as possible into their own typical voice.

Also sometimes his character names are very funny: Pierce Whymper (The Starvel Hollow Tragedy), William Service (The Sea Mystery), Cosgrove Ponson (The Ponson Case).

Venom #252-253

It all stemmed from wanting to do something to celebrate Venom reaching issue 252–the number in which in Amazing Spider-Man Spidey started wearing the symbiote. When I suggested we put Venom in a red and blue costume, I was only kidding…but so many of the best ideas start as jokes! Everyone loved it. I got Luchiano to design it because hot damn he is great at that. There are so many great details in there. I then took that design to writer Jordan Morris, who came up with the character and story to go with it. That story will be a backup in the issue and introduce this new Venom to the world! But we weren’t done with the design yet–Al Ewing ALSO loved the look of it and the celebration, so he cooked up an excuse for MJ to rock that look in 616 as well! -- Jordan D. White
