Since yesterday, whenever I closed my laptop lid there was an audio feedback squeal that drove me nuts. It also sounded like the microphone was open for recording, which I didn't understand since I've never used the mic for anything. Laptop is Acer 5920 and runs Microsoft Vista. I solved the problem by going to Control Panel, under Hardware and Sounds I clicked on Manage Audio Devices, selected Recording from the Sound Menu, clicked on Properties, and selected Levels (general, levels, enchancements, advanced tabs). On the Level Screen it says Microphone and Microphone Boost (+20 dB). I slid the ruler over to 0 on the Microphone Boost ruler. Problem solved! Take that laptop! I've no idea what changed the settings.

You're probably not too happy with a complete stranger posting, nor the fact that I found this particular post via Google, but THANKS THANKS THANKS for the above information regarding the horrible feedback on the Acer 5920. I can now play music louder without it sounding like a discordant and irritating version of the Velvet Underground and therefore problem solved!

omg thank you man

Thanks! :-) I've no idea either what caused it. Maybe it's a Vista screwup or related to game playing somehow (wasn't playing games then though, so, huh). I'm glad you found it helpful.

Thanks for posting the solution, our laptop started making the feedback noise after we had a repair done on the dc jack (yep another acer problem) Just wondering if you had had any work done on yours just before the sound issues? Thanks again

Nope, my laptop hadn't been worked on. The employees might have used your laptop for some purpose of theirs....I've heard/read horror stories about employees using the computer the customer brought in to be repaired. I'm really not sure what caused it since I had never changed those setting. Vista's so much fun to deal with.

Thanks

I dont understand why Acer didnt build in a switch which would shut off the microphones when the lid is closed!! Alternativley use a Function key to disable them, like the loudspeaker (Fn + F8).

Acer Aspire 5736Z-4435 Laptop Audio Feedback Problem Solved!

Windows 7 Home Premium

There was an audio feedback squeal that drove me nuts. It also sounded like the microphone was open for recording, which I didn't understand since I've never used the microphone for anything.

My Laptop is the Acer Aspire 5736Z-4435 and includes the Windows 7 Home Premium operating system.

To solve the problem:

1. Click [START]

2. Click [Control Panel]

3. Click [Hardware and Sound]

4. Under [Sound], click [Manage audio devices]

5. Click the menu tab [Recording]

6. Click [Microphone]

7. Click [Properties]

8. Click the menu tab [Levels]

9. The [Levels] display shows two slide bars:[Microphone] and [Microphone Boost (+20 dB) ]

10. On the [Microphone Boost (+20 dB) ] slide the [Microphone Boost (+20 dB) ] slide bar over to 0.

11. Click [OK]

12. Click [OK]

13. To close the [Hardware and Sound] display, click [x].

Problem solved!
